Our filters sit in the Air Conditioning unit bothering nobody.  So easy to ignore.  As dust and “stuff” accumulates on it, the amount of air that gets through is limited.  This will then put a strain on you A/C motor and shorten it’s life costing much more than a filter.  An ordinary 1″ wide filter should be changed monthly, but every two months is fine.
